Google Buying Twitter? Arrington Says So

googletwitterWe all knew it was bound to happen, Big Brother Google is in talks (and they seem to be pretty advanced) with Cool New Kid on the Block Twitter to work some sort of acquisition deal. The search giant (that was once loved by all, much like Twitter is today) is looking into buying Twitter. Here’s what Michael Arrington said:

“Here’s a heck of a rumor that we’ve sourced from two separate people close to the negotiations: Google is in late stage negotiations to acquire Twitter. We don’t know the price but can assume its well, well north of the $250 million valuation that they saw in their recent funding.”

Now, don’t panic. If Google does buy Twitter, it won’t be the end of the microblogging platform that gave you the best web service in years (yet made it very difficult for you to make actual friends). Twitter will probably stay the same, much like it is now, maybe with some improvements on the users’ end.

What Google wants from Twitter, which we all suspected all along, is to get a foot in the “real-time” searching Twitter Search can offer. Google doesn’t do real-time, and if they tried to go at it now, they would fail. The thing is, real-time (what’s going on at this exact moment in any part of the world), can’t be indexed. It has to be instant, and the input has to be human. There’s no way around it.

The real question is: will Twitter users be cool with being little Google workhorses? Think about it. If Google buys Twitter, every Twitter user will become part of the Goolge Real-Time search infrastructure. Every one of your Twits is an input that allows Google to track what’s going on at any particular time in any particular place. Doesn’t this take the fun out of Twitter?

Another question: can Google squeeze some cash out of Twitter? Or is this going to be like YouTube: big search volume, little moolah, constant changes to make it work?
