How FriendFeed Can One-Up Facebook

FriendFeed: almost there, still work to be done

Have you noticed how the hip-tech crowd uses FriendFeed, but the rest of us tend to ignore it? Well, there’s a reason for that. FriendFeed is innovative (the dude that invented Gmail is behind it, so you know they know what they’re doing), but Facebook is huge.

What does this mean for FriendFeed? Well, Facebook has been jacking FriendFeed’s swag for months now, but no one has noticed due to the fact that no one is on FriendFeed.

So, yesterday I was checking out FriendFeed’s new design, and I see that they’re trying to change up the game by offering better features, but is it enough?

Stan Schroeder just wrote about how FriendFeed can improve, and I think he makes some great points.

•    It needs a redesign: The new redesign is way too simple. The old-school look might be nice to some, but you need to make it nice. Some of the cool-tech crowd are calling it fugly and seizure inducing. It’s not cool when your main user base thinks your re-design is seizure inducing.
•    Twist Around Live Updating: What’s the deal with live updating? Is it really that useful? Live updating is something that you have to have, but never make it the stand-out feature.
•    Add more organizational features: Posting should  be simple, but there needs to be a more organized way to do it. How about sharing certain things with certain people? The more organized you make social sharing/broadcasting, the better off your users will be in the long run.

•    Bet on Facebook and Twitter: They’re the ones that are growing. Aim to make your service integrate seamlessly with them. That’s where most of your future users are bound to be. In fact, people that use Facebook to broadcast their online activity are more likely to use FriendFeed in the future.
•    Search: Most are hailing Twitter search as the next big thing, and FriendFeed could offer something similar, but on a bigger scale. Social Sharing search would be greatly useful, especially when it comes to tracking trends.

Can you think of anything else that FriendFeed could do to one-up Facebook and win the sharing wars?
