How to Go Mainstream with Your Startup

cwln198lThere must be nothing nicer than seeing your startup go mainstream. When everyone is talking about a startup, much like Google in the past and Twitter today, the founders probably feel a pride that can’t be compared to everything.

It must be something like seeing your child graduate from college and become CEO of a huge company. So, after all the mushy feelings stuff, how can you help your startup become mainstream? Well, my friend, it’s not an easy task. Here are some things that may help you, but without lady luck on your side, you won’t get too far:

-    Focus: Create a team whose sole purpose is getting your product out there. It might consume resources at first, but if your startup begins to grow through word of mouth and press coverage, then you know you’re on the right path.
-    Strike a balance between ease of use and business value: You can’t have something too complex, because people won’t use it while they work. I know that your startup idea isn’t meant to be used while people work, but that’s when most of us are in front of a computer. You need to be able to tie it into the work routine. Think of Twitter, it takes no time to tweet, so people do it while they work, go to school, take a dump, etc.
-    Be prepared for change: If your idea doesn’t work at first, then be ready to change up in order to cater to your users’ tendencies. It should help you adapt to more users and their needs.

-    Listen to feedback from users: Ok, this one is a bit hard. In the one hand, you need the feedback, but if you cater to everyone’s feedback, you’ll end up with a product no one can use. Listen from feedback from the most trusted users (the ones that have been with you for a long time and have it in their best interests for the service to improve).
-    Wait, and be patient: You won’t go mainstream overnight. You need to work at it. Don’t be surprised if it takes forever.
-    Pick a deadline: Set dates for major events, even if you don’t meet the exact date, make sure you work towards them.
