Possibly the Best April’s Fool Joke Ever

faceAt KillerBlog, we were thinking of reporting something crazy for today. But when we got to the office, and saw the great April Fool’s day jokes that were already floating around (Gmail Autopilot was the best), we knew we couldn’t serve up something that was both funny and credible without you noticing.

Luckily for us, the folks at Opera Labs were creative enough to come up with something that not only is both funny and believable, but it’s actually useful. If you still haven’t read about Opera Face Gestures, you should.

The concept of controlling your computer without using the mouse and keyboard has probably been around as long as the mouse and the keyboard themselves. Some are hailing touch as the next great step in computer control, but come on! Minority Report is a great movie, but can you imagine touching your PC screen after eating a Taco Bell burrito? It would get all greasy (much like your smartphone-of-choice’s screen).

So, what can we do? Face Gestures! It’s actually a great idea, and I dare new startups to consider implementing it. It makes sense. Most computers already have webcams; in fact, all new laptops (even netbooks) come with built in cameras. So why not control your browser with it? It will allow you to get rid of the navigation bars and finally enjoy great full screen browsing.

Most great ideas come from accidents, but this one came out of an April Fool’s Joke. In fact, Opera should consider building Face Gestures into their browsers, just for the heck of it.

Don’t some Smartphones have front-facing cameras too? Wouldn’t it be cool to use your phone’s browser through facial gestures?

What can we learn from this? Well, most great ideas come by through accidents, so when you are brainstorming in your startup to think of the next great feature, don’t only look at the creative heads, look at the guy fooling around in the corner, he might have something you missed.

Have you come up with a great idea by accident? If so, please share.
