Tips/AdviceStartup Roles Explained
Your startup is quickly growing, and it’s time to set down in paper what everyone does. Think of your startup as a masterfully orchestrated play. You are going to have your main actors, and you’re going to need people behind the scenes making everything come together.
Every startup needs to have roles defined, and especially what is expected of each person who is filling each role. Without this kind of organization, it’s going to be difficult for your startup to grow beyond your parent’s basement.
• The Visionary: This is the person that’s behind the big ideas. They don’t necessarily have to know much about programming and web development. Brainstorming is something this person should do constantly.
• Lead Developer: These guys make ideas happen. They’re the brain power behind the startups. Without them, ideas would never come to life and the user wouldn’t be able to interact with the startup.
• The Artist: Like it or not, you’re going to have to have one of these artistically blessed individuals in your team. What would Twitter be without the Fail Whale? There’s a lot that goes into the way that a startup looks. These guys are the ones that have to make your startup look nice, because if you have an ugly site, you’re not going to hit it big time.
• Marketer: A startup is a business that has to be sold to other people. No one really needs a Facebook profile, a Digg account, or a Gmail address. But, we all have them. Why? Because these products have been sold to us, and we’ve bought into them.
Here is a longer list of the roles that go into startups, but I think the above list is great for emerging one. After you define the roles, you have to come up with an idea that will allow you to keep track of what everyone does, to make sure your startup keeps moving forward.
